How-To: Grill Prep and Cleaning
Before you cook anything, start the right way with a grill and grates that are clean and ready for action. Grill Prep and Cleaning can take two minutes and will make a big difference in your food.
Empty any old ash
A mountain of ash at the bottom of the grill will block vents and make it difficult to regulate temperatures. If you have a pile of residual ash from the last time you cooked on the bottom of your barbecue, get rid of it now.
Clean the grates
To clean any rust or residue off your grill grates, use a stiff-bristled wire brush. You can also use food-safe cleaners, which contain agents that help cut off caked-on grease, for extra-clean grates.
Pre-heat your grill grates
Pre-heating your grill grates before putting food on them will help prevent foods from sticking. Once your coals are lit, put the grates on and let them heat up for a few minutes.
Oil the grill grates
A simple step that too many people skip. Wad up a paper towel and, using tongs, dip it in some cooking oil. Then use the tongs to thoroughly oil up the cooking grates. See grill prep and cleaning is easy and your grill is now ready to add food and start cooking.
